Nikki has been working at Knivesandtools as a software developer since November 2020. Her career path is an interesting one.
‘I graduated in Nutrition & Dietetics and worked in the food industry for nine years. At one of those companies, I worked as a quality officer. Here, I collaborated a lot with the IT department to optimise the ERP system. This sparked my interest in IT.’
Many people might find it intimidating to make such a big career switch, but for Nikki it was an opportunity to get more enjoyment out of her work and develop new skills. But how does one make the change from the food industry to the IT department of a webshop?
‘I already felt like the food industry wasn't my real passion, so I started exploring my options. That's why I opted for a retraining program. This program pairs you up with a company that supports you during your career switch. That's how I ended up at Knivesandtools.’
With the right guidance and support, Nikki has proven that it is never too late to pursue a new career path. She now finds great satisfaction in her work.
‘In my job, it's not just about developing. Above all, you have to have a good understanding of how all business processes work. Every change has a far-reaching effect, and that is what makes my work intriguing. Even though it sometimes seems abstract, I work on specific features and processes, and it's great to see that they really work.’
Nikki's unique background and understanding of business processes make her a valued member of her team. She is very happy to work at Knivesandtools.
‘We work in a small team, and we all carry a lot of responsibilities. I appreciate the open, pleasant atmosphere and the flat management structure; you don't have to face many obstacles to get things done. Our onboarding program is also top-notch. You get to know all the departments and experience different roles. For me, this was crucial, as it helped me understand the booking process, which is useful when working on related applications and processes.’
